چکیده

This paper studies a multiclass queueing system with endogenous abandonments where congestion a↵ects customers’ abandonment behavior and vice versa. Our model captures this interaction by developing two closely related models: an abandonment model and a queueing model. In the abandonment model, customers take the virtual waiting time distribution as given. Class k customers receive a reward rk from service and incur a cost ck per period of waiting. Customers are forward looking and make wait or abandon decisions dynamically to maximize their expected discounted utilities. The queueing model takes the customers’ abandonment time distribution as an input and studies the resulting virtual waiting time distribution. Because the multiclass queueing system is not amenable to exact analysis, we resort to an approximate analysis in the conventional heavy tra c limit (under the hazard rate scaling). Leveraging the so-called state-space collapse property, we provide a characterization of the system performance. Combining the results for the two models, we show that there exists a unique equilibrium in which the customers’ abandonment time and the virtual waiting time for the various classes are consistent in the two models. Lastly, we provide a computational scheme to calculate the equilibrium numerically and apply that using data from an Israeli bank call center.

Dynamic Scheduling of a Multiclass Queue in the Halfin-Whitt Heavy Traffic Regime

We consider a Markovian model of a multiclass queueing system in which a single large pool of servers attends to the various customer classes. Customers waiting to be served may abandon the queue, and there is a cost penalty associated with such abandonments. Service rates, abandonment rates, and abandonment penalties are generally different for the different classes. The problem studied is tha...

Stationary Distribution Convergence for a Multiclass Single-server Queue in Heavy Traffic

In the author’s recent paper [11], it is established that in a multiclass single-server queue with regular service disciplines, the stationary distributions and their moments for workload as well as for queue length can be approximated by appropriate exponential distributions and their moments in the heavy-traffic regime. In this work, relaxing the assumption of moment generating function on th...

An equilibrium analysis of a discrete-time Markovian queue with endogenous abandonments

This paper studies a Geo/Geo/1+GI queue in which the abandonments are endogenous. One crucial feature of this model is that the abandonment behavior is affected by the system performance and vice versa. Our model captures this interaction by developing two closely related models: an abandonment model and a queueing model. In the abandonment model, customers take the virtual waiting time distrib...

On scheduling a multiclass queue with abandonments under general delay costs

We consider a multiclass queueing system with abandonments and general delay costs. A system manager makes dynamic scheduling decisions to minimize long-run average delay and abandonment costs. We consider the three types of delay cost: (i) linear, (ii) convex, and (iii) convex–concave, where the last one corresponds to settings where customers may have a particular deadline in mind but once th...

Multiclass Queueing Systems in Heavy Traffic: An Asymptotic Approach Based on Distributional and Conservation Laws

We propose a new approach to analyze multiclass queueing systems in heavy traffic based on what we consider as fundamental laws in queueing systems, namely distributional and conservation laws. Methodologically, we extend the distributional laws from single class queueing systems to multiple classes and combine them with conservation laws to find the heavy traffic behavior of the following syst...
